Garage Barn
This pretty four bay barn is now a large three bay garage, with the fourth bay housing a back-up electricity generator and a workshop (window at right). This
300 year old structure had been badly damaged by the big winds of 1987 and was becoming unsafe, leaning dangerously to the left of the picture. The structural
engineer remarked that it was surprising that it was still standing. The immediate course of action was to brace the structure with scaffolding to prevent
further collapse.
The roof tiles, doors, brickwork and feather-boarding were completely removed, leaving the original 300 year oak structure. The skeleton was straightened
and then braced with strong metal brackets and new oak timbers, where the old oak had deteriorated. The complete structure was then re-assembled using traditional
methods and materials wherever possible. with modern insulation and preservation. The floor was relaid and new doors fitted. The appearance of the
barn is extremely similar to what was found, but it is straighter, fully functional and safe for use; the original 300 year old frame serves on..
