Cottage and Hovel
This cottage and hovel project involved the complete renovation of the 1960s brick cottage and the stripping down of the ancient hovel to the original oak. The
ancient hovel was incorporated into the 1960s brick cottage and became a utility room, housing sinks, washing machine and boiler. We took the hovel back to its
original oak structure and undertook a detailed survey. We found that some oak members were missing and that the join to the cottage was unsound. The
structure was straightened, braced, rot-protected, insulated and waterproofed with modern materials The internal surfaces were plastered, leaving the ancient
oak wood work visible. Some essential oak members were replaced with new oak, hand-cut to match the style of the original construction.
